Dr. Miller wrote this book after being diagnosed with cancer and continued this work up until the time of
his death. This encouraging and informative book shows us how to cope with facing terminal cancer
without giving up hope. Dr. Miller provides unique insight into this experience from both a patient and
physician standpoint. As Dr. Miller so aptly states, this book is about “prolonging and enjoying our lives in
spite of all these depressing facts. It’s about facing reality, but not giving up hope.” It was Dr. Miller’s
desire to provide friends, loved ones and health care providers his unique perspective as a physician, clinical
researcher and as a patient, with helpful information drawn from his education and experience.
In Life’s Final Journey, Dr. Miller takes his readers through the initial reaction of shock in receiving a
terminal cancer diagnosis and the accompanying feelings of anger, depression, fear, as well as physical pain
and suffering. All the while, Dr. Miller tells us that knowledge is power and often a source of hope!
As you will see, this book is personal and practical.
In the final chapters of the book, Dr. Miller discusses relationships, loved ones, communication and humor.
He offers a true primer in lay language that provides expertise into various treatments and skillfully discusses
the various types of cancers.
Lastly, Dr. Miller offers discussion on quality of life issues such as mental and physical conditioning,
nutrition, pain relief, therapeutic benefits of pets and prevalence of friends. Dr. Miller believed strongly that
the best way to help ourselves is to help others, which he skillfully did in his book. His final advice was:
…live for each day. Waking up each morning, in spite of the knowledge of disease and disability, is still a
wondrous event.
...try to enjoy life as much as possible. Never abandon a sense of humor. Those around us must be kept as
happy as possible and they will return the same feelings.
The underlying key to success is still love. Love yourself first. Without this ability, one cannot truly love
others. It is never too late to enhance this vital quality.
As a final tribute, Myriam Cabello, Assistant Director, UCSF Medical Center, provides perhaps the most
suitable homage to Dr. Miller. This is the most courageous and selfless book written by a physician, whom,
at his final hours, did not think of himself, but on how to help others to manage the pain and tragedy of
dying, which he audaciously endured on his departure. His soft voice reminds us: Timorem mortis supera!
Overcome your fear of death!
